Japanese Dragon

$120.00

The Japanese styled dragon closely resembles Chinese and Korean dragons because most dragons from Asian folklore stem from the same origin. That being said, the dragons each have certain traits that reflects the cultures and history of each country in a way that distinguishes them from each other. For example, Japanese dragons will only ever have three claws per limb because the depictions of China’s dragons bore four-five claws (depending on the imperial status of the dragons’ owner. There was a time when anyone besides the Chinese emperor could be executed for wearing a dragon with five claws on their skin or clothing. I colored my illustration of a Japanese dragon with blue and white because out of all of the Japanese myth’s I could find, they described specific dragons as white-scaled. The Japanese dragons were associated with water and said to control rain and agriculture, so I decided to add some ocean waves styled after Katsushika Hokusai’s famous art to try and further associate the dragon’s style with Japan.
